Shareefa and Fahmeeda
2009
8.5 x 24 inches
Archival digital print
Edition 1-15
For the past fifteen years Shareefa (26) and Fahmeeda (22) of Watlar village have been living in a stinking, tiny corner of their house. They don’t speak to anyone and their only pastime is to keep staring out of the window. Their mother recounts their trauma: “They were my pleasure and pride. They were full of life. But around 1995 they were a witness to killings in a major blast and ever since they have withdrawn into a shell. None of us can reach them. The blast first affected Shareefa, but within a year Fahmeeda too developed similar traits. I really do not know what went wrong. Shareefa’s silence is broken by her occasional bouts of anger and aggression. She suddenly shows hostility towards her father and her sister-in-law. She threatens to kill them. Fahmeeda had not uttered a word for nine years at a stretch. She is also crippled and can’t move. Both of them keep speaking to themselves and cry for days on end. They also don’t sleep for long periods of time. Initially, we thought they were faking their illness. Then we thought they were under some spell. But later, we realised that they were seriously ill and needed some kind of treatment.” India, Jammu and Kashmir, Gandarbal district

Edition 1-15
Zulaikha is now 21, but she was 12 when she was gangraped by the security forces in her village Chachihal in 2001. On a routine patrol, the uniformed men picked her up, took her to a nearby house and raped her in front of her brother and other children in the neighbourhood. This was just the first round of attack. They later took her to the forest and continued to force themselves on her. Zulaikha who was in total shock after this incident withdrew completely and did not speak for a whole year. Two years after she was raped, her brother was killed by the security forces. They suspected him to be a militant. In this montage, it is the father’s palm that displays the passport picture of his son. Zulaikha has now somewhat recovered to narrate her own tragic tale. When asked if her face should be partially hidden for the photograph, she retorted: “Why should I cover my face? I am not ashamed. I did not commit any crime.” However, her father, Hussein, and mother, Zenab, are worried people. They are sure that nobody would come forward to marry their daughter.
