Navroze Contractor

 
Navroze Contractor grew up in Ahmedabad. Studied at Shreyas, the first Montessori school in India. He obtained a BA (Fine Arts) degree in painting and photography at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University of Baroda. His interest in cinema took him to the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Here he studied film direction and cinematography. He further studied photography under Bhupendra Karia in India and the U.S. and studied cinematography under master Laszlo Kovacs in the U.S. He also studied video production at Sony Corporation, Tokyo, Japan.
 
Navroze has been the cinematographer for many path breaking and award winning feature films. Some of them are; ‘DUVIDHA’ directed by Mani Kaul (Winner of the National and several International Awards), ‘22nd JUNE 1897’ and ‘LIMITED MANUSKI’ by Nachiket Patwardhan (Winner of the National Film Award), ‘PERCY’ by Pervez Merwanji (Winner at Manheim International Film Festival), ‘LOVE IN THE TIME OF MALARIA’ by Sanjiv Shah (Winner of the National Film Award), ‘DEVARKADU’ by Pattabhi Rama Reddy. ‘DEVI AHILYA BAI’ 35mm Cinemascope, directed by Nachiket Patwardhan. ‘FRAMES’, Directed by Chetan Shah, first complete feature film to be shot on HD.
 
He is one of the biggest contributors to the documentary scene, world wide, as his name is attached to such legendary films like ‘BALAD OF PABU’ by George Luneau (France), ‘DREAMS OF THE DRAGON’S CHILDREN’ (shot entirely in China) by Pierre Hoffmann (Germany), ‘ARE YOU LISTENING’ by Martha Stewart (U S A), ‘ALL IN THE FAMILY’ by Ketan Mehta, ‘WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS CITY’, ‘SOMETHING LIKE A WAR’ and ‘THE LEGACY OF MALTHUS’ by Deepa Dhanraj (Winner of Several International Awards), ‘FAMINE 87’ by Sanjiv Shah. ‘LAST HOUSE IN BOMBAY’ by Luke Jennings (Winner at the Bombay International Short Film Festival). There are endless films and directors he has worked with.
 
He has had five one man shows of his still photographs: one in Bombay, two in Bangalore and two in San Francisco, U S A. His photographs of jazz musicians are in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum, Washington DC, U S A. He has taken photography and film workshops at the School Of Architecture, Ahmedabad, NID at Ahmedabad, IIM in Bangalore, Pomona State University, California, U S A and at the University of the Andes at Merida, Venezuela. Besides teaching at the highest levels he also takes photography workshops in primary schools around India.
 
He has been writing book revues and contributing articles to car and bike magazines on motorcycles and cars. Presently he contributes to CAR India & BIKE India. He contributes articles every week in BANGALORE MIRROR, a daily newspaper. He is also part of the Red Roosters Racing International motorcycle team.
 
His first book, THE DREAMS OF THE DRAGONS CHILDREN has been published by Penguin Books India (2003) and is a ‘must’ read for any travel or film buff. At the moment Navroze is in the midst of several documentary projects with Deepa Dhanraj.
